I had the first satellite, the first man in space, first orbital. All my manned missions were successful (even the first manned docking), something I never had before (having regularly played the CD version since the mid-90s).įrom the data I had during and at the end of the game it, it seems that Sputnik blew up, which gave me an early advantage. I did not reload a single time (!) and won in October '69. I had not a single failed manned mission in the whole game (which makes me think that I had all these critical failures in the previous 50 games in order to have this one game without one). If it had not been for a random "Gemini capsule reduced back to 48%" and a similar event to the Titan rocket, as well as Scott dying through a random event (accident) that got a crucial mission scrubbed in order to verify safety standards (or whatever the announcer said), I would have been on the moon in 1968. I'm even tempted to say that my game was a cakewalk. Sorry to revive this one, but I just wanted to add my insights after having played the 1.0 version for the first time now. they scrubbed on the Orbital activities on the return, so the lunar landing was a "partial failure", luckily it still counts if they're alive. ![]() I exploded countless times, and reloaded and even the EOR had 3 failures. It's pretty cool to hear a female voice declare the victory of the Soviet Union while she moonwalks :) It took me 1 and a half hours and 30+ loads. I landed the first woman (haha does that mean I don't get first "man" on the moon? she's the LM pilot and thus the only one that landed) on the moon with EOR. If you don't consider loading back dozens of times as cheating, then here you go, my best success: Well like above check Peyre's site it's where I learnt the more advanced concepts, and the charts are a great help. Also if you play historical I find the Russian space program seems to progress faster, since they have cheaper equipment (though less reliability). If you've played and know what to do, then a casual game (without a ton of saving/loading) will get you to th moon somewhere around 1969. If anything having a plan, being meticulous and saving often will get you the victory (I like to save when things get good). You definitely can win, it's just that failures deal a devastating blow. Yet realize that there are kinks with the save game feature and it could cause issues (I tried to use a loophole that increased both my budget and the Russians, and they landed on the moon in 1964 using their direct descent vehicle because I gave them way too much money accidently). It's rather frustrating to watch your moon mission go perfect until re-entry ot splashdown. Yes, you will have many games where nothing goes right. There are many games where the only reason I won is because the Russians failed in their moon flights. You can schedule a Lunar flyby, Earth Orbital LEM test, Lunar Orbital LEM test on one turn, and then your moonshot on the next.Įxpect the Russians to get ahead of you at times. It helps when you're flying Gemeni missions, but also when flying Apollo. I'd also suggest buying at least one other launch pad around 1960. So at worst, you can send 6 missions and still be at 70% (assuming any failures are docking-module related). If you fail, it isn't fatal, and your safety goes up by 5. Whenever you send 'nauts up, throw in a docking attempt. Unmanned missions are important for getting your docking module ready. If you can't afford the Titan missile, you can use the booster technology to get the lift ability with the Atlas rocket for Earth orbital missions, and while flying those research the Titan. If you have planned to begin flights with Gemeni by 1963, and you're having problems with Mercury, abandon Mercury in favor of Gemeni. Figure 3 turns before any capsule is ready to fly.Īlso, strive to stay on schedule. Don't jump into the Tital rockets right away, unless you have the money. So start researching Gemeni while finishing your Mercury flights. The best position to be in is to have your next generation capsule being researched while still flying the old. The bigger risks that you take, the more they could hurt you. However, the computer player will always give you a run for your money. ![]() Even as early as 1967 (Gemini with booster and Cricket lander).
